Our History and Ethos
Phillips Dempsey was established to meet the legal requirements of small and medium sized businesses which are often underserved. In our experience, owner managed and family businesses suffer from falling between two stools; they are not lucrative enough for the larger firms yet require expertise lacking in high street practices. Phillips Dempsey aims to bridge that gap by providing SMEs with high quality, focused and timely advice at fees they can afford.
Originally formed in 2009 under the name Dixon Phillips, the firm changed to Phillips Dempsey in November 2021. This followed the closure of the firm’s commercial property department and departure of co-founder Paul Dixon, in anticipation of his retirement in a few years’ time. The firm now focuses exclusively on providing corporate and commercial law services and is led by Olly Phillips and Matt Dempsey who have worked together in providing these services to local businesses since 2013.
Phillips Dempsey has in-depth knowledge of constantly shifting legal requirements and a strong understanding of the needs and pressures of growing companies. We work closely and flexibly with all our clients to help them solve the legal issues they face and to advise and guide them through the growth and development of their businesses.
We advise companies in a wide variety of sectors and industries. Our clients include manufacturers, retailers, engineering companies, construction companies, technology companies and professional services firms.

Our Team
oLLY phillips
Olly completed his legal training at Bates Wells, London in 1998 and joined their Media and Entertainment Department.
In 2002 he joined the Commercial Law department at what is now Ashtons Legal (working in their Bury St Edmunds and Cambridge offices) prior to setting up his own commercial practice and then establishing Phillips Dempsey in Cambridge in 2009.

matt dempsey
Having enjoyed a successful career working as a journalist in Cambridge, Matt made the decision to pursue a new career in law in 2008, receiving a commendation in the Legal Practice Course from City University in London and a distinction in Commercial Law.
Matt joined Phillips Dempsey as a corporate lawyer upon qualifying in the spring of 2013, having previously worked at the firm as part of his training contract.

KELLY PHILLIPS
Kelly has worked as a paralegal in Cambridge for the past 15 years, and qualified as a legal executive in 2019. She now works for Phillips Dempsey as a Chartered Legal Executive, assisting Olly and Matt with corporate transactions.

LISA DEMPSEY
Lisa joined Phillips Dempsey as Office Manager in 2021 having had previous careers in journalism and teaching. She works alongside Olly, Matt and Kelly providing day-to-day office administration and support, as well as being in charge of the firm’s accounts.
